ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy Efficiency is an increasing priority for everyone. With the new E.U. Directive for low voltage motors being phased in from 16th June 2011 it is something that we will all have to consider. The new regulations will cover 2, 4 and 6 pole single speed, three phase induction motors from .75Kw to 375Kw (ATEX, Brake motors and motors designed to operate at temperatures over 400ºC will be exempt). The new legislation will basically mean that new motors must meet or exceed IE2 (EFF1) high efficiency standards. See below for new standards and timetable for implementation.

COMPARISON OF THE NEW STANDARDS AND EXISTING SCHEMES:

New EuPDirective
Current European Voluntary Agreement CEMEP
IE1 Standard Efficiency
Effectively EFF2
IE2 High Efficiency
Effectively EFF1
IE3 Premium Efficiency

TIMETABLE FOR LEGISLATION PHASES:
  • Phase 1 From 16th June 2011 Motors must meet the IE2 efficiency standard
  • Phase 2 From 1st January 2015 Motors between 7.5Kw - 375Kw must meet either IE3 standard or IE2 if fitted with a variable speed drive
  • Phase 3 From 1st January 2017 Motors between .75Kw - 375Kw must meet either IE3 standard or IE2 if fitted with a variable speed drive
Many of the cheaper motors on the market today are not meeting efficiency standards and come 16th June 2011 will be illegal on the European market. AEMS are ensuring that all of our suppliers are in a position to meet and exceed their obligations with regards to energy efficiency.
